The Syllabus Program is designed to motivate students to achieve music goals.

Syllabus Exams for 2022-2023

We are happy to announce that Syllabus Exams starting Fall 2022 will be primarily in-person with masking optional, following the CDC guidelines as well as the Oregon Health Authority for more localized information.

Virtual Syllabus has its own dates for those students who absolutely cannot attend the in-person exam (e.g. the student lives out of state). Both Virtual and in-person Syllabus will include Rhythm and Sight Reading. Teacher attendance and teacher conference is required for both in-person and virtual exams. As in previous years, PDFs and video links are due four days (Mon/Tues) before the scheduled Syllabus dates. See forms below for instructions on making PDFs and video links.

Dates for all districts including the new Virtual District are posted in the OMTA Syllabus Schedule below.

Please direct questions to your District Syllabus Chair, and remember to renew your OMTA membership to unlock your Leggiero account.

Students of OMTA teachers have the option of participating in Syllabus, a music evaluation program in which students are tested on their mastery of various musical concepts. These concepts are divided into 10 levels of difficulty and include music theory, sight reading, ear training, rhythm reading, repertoire, and technique.

It is open to students studying the following:

Classical Piano, Strings, Voice, Woodwinds, and Jazz

A student prepares for the exam by studying the curriculum outlined in the OMTA Syllabus Manual.

The program is flexible, offering three avenues of participation: Full Evaluation, Demonstration, and Creative Audition. The difference between these is explained in the OMTA Syllabus Manual. Each student is tested one-on-one by an adjudicator, who provides a written critique of the student’s performance. Students who participate are awarded a certificate . The evaluations are held in private music studios and schools throughout Portland and its surrounding suburbs.

The Level X Recognition Recitals generally are scheduled on the first weekend of June.
